The Mom Biz Coach Live on Blog Talk Radio

Last Thursday I had a few minutes to spare at the end of my coaching office hours, so I decided to become a Blog Talk Radio show host.

Yep, you read that correctly. My decision-making process was pretty much like: “Hmmm…This does look interesting. Others I trust think it’s the bomb. I guess I’ll do it.”

I’ve never hosted a radio show before.

I know next-to-nothing about Blog Talk Radio’s platform and how to utilize it effeciently.

But I set up a profile, gave my show a name, clicked a few times, and voila! Within minutes I became an internet radio show host.

Just for fun, I scheduled my first live broadcast for the next day. A few minutes before going live on the show, I dialed in on the “host line,” finished making a few bullet points about the topic I was covering (“The Top Mistakes Work at Home Moms Make”), and shortly thereafter hosted my very first Audio Blog on The Mom Biz Coach Blog Talk Radio Show.

What a hoot! I had no idea what I was doing beforehand. I didn’t wait until I had studied all the online tutorials that were offered. I didn’t research, ponder and analyze my topic and whether it was the best I could’ve chosen. And I didn’t write out a script to make sure I said everything perfectly.

Nope. I learn best by doing. I get things done by just doing them. I have a lot of fun this way, even though I am at certain risk of making mistakes. Sometimes I make really big mistakes that make me feel embarrassed for a while. Other times I enjoy myself in the moment, not putting too much pressure on myself to be perfect, and in those moments I’m usually happiest with who I am. Flaws/mistakes included.

If you’d like to listen in as I practice doing things I’ve never done before, I’ll be doing just that on Tuesday, 3/31/09 at 11:30 am ET. You can tune in by clicking . I’m adding lots of new shows, so perhaps bookmark or make my show a favorite if you’d like to keep updated.

Next time, while you’re doing the radio show, multi-task and do a TV show at the same time – . It’s really easy.

Hey, that’s a great idea! Needless to say, I’m a big fan of multitasking (partly out of necessity being a mom of three kids and partly because it’s just my personality). I like the idea of doing something one time and finding multiple ways to repurpose it. I’ve never used Do you prefer it over something like YouTube? Video is on my list of great marketing vehicles to try out.

Ustream is live-streaming to the web versus simply uploading some video to YouTube. You can create your own TV show, broadcast it live and even schedule further repeats using automatically archived content from your live show. The potential of the platform is amazing, especially in today’s world of local news and TV cutbacks. Check out Phog Lounge’s channel on Monday night around 10 pm if you get a chance []. They usually live-stream their open mike show. You can also view their archives.

I’m working on a project for WE Speak using UStream and other video sharing services. I hope to have enough content by the summer to launch our own local internet TV channel with a mix of live and pre-recorded content. When I saw your blog about Blog Talk Radio, I thought you would be a perfect candidate for this type of endeavour. Many people who do podcasts/radio shows are now starting to live stream them as another distribution channel. It works really well with Facebook and blogging platforms as well. You can embed a UStream player in each that automatically turns on when you start broadcasting. Your UStream control panel also includes a Twitter app to publicize your show when you go on the air.

That’s great Lara. I have been asked to appear on a couple of shows, but have never hosted my own.

Thank you, Rose. I was amazed at how easy it was to get started. I have a lot to learn before I start bringing in my co-hosts for my teleseminar series, and then even more to learn when it comes to managing questions from callers and online listeners. I have a couple of friends who have been hosting with BTR for a while and they’re kind enough to mentor me a bit, so I am sure I’ll figure it out sooner or later.

BTW, I browsed your blog and enjoyed your Earth Day post! We’re getting snow tonight, but I’m sure hoping for sunny and 70 soon!
