Effective Mompreneurs Have Effective Business Plans (and you can, too)

One of the simplest and most effective things I’ve done for my business is to finally sit down and write a business plan. I avoided doing this for three years. I had all sorts of reasons why I didn’t think it was necessary, and I had even more ideas about how hard it would be to do. Silly me.

I can’t wait to interview Melodie Lane, National Marketing Manager from the “One Page Business Plan” Company for my next teleseminar in the WoMEN: What Mom Entrepreneurs Need teleseminar series. This will be the third installment in the WoMEN series, and it will take place next Tuesday, April 28th, at Noon ET on my BlogTalkRadio show.

I had the good fortune of meeting Melodie on twitter (no surprise there!). Here’s a little background on her so you will know where she’s coming from and a picture of her with her four fabulous boys:

Three and a half years ago, Melodie was launching her last business as an independent project manager and attended a local workshop on how to write a “One Page Business Plan.” There she met Jim Horan, founder and CEO of the “One Page Business Plan.” Jim became her first client and dear friend. Today, Melodie is an integral part of the company as the National Marketing Manager. She loves doing this job within the sisterhood of moms and enjoys the opportunities the company provides her to do what she is passionate about-helping people turn their ideas into thriving businesses. How often does “no” mean “the end” for you?

It is totally human to get discouraged when something doesn’t go the way you want it to. Say you come up with an idea for the perfect getaway for you and your husband, and though it makes you sigh and get that faraway, relaxed look in your eyes when you discuss it, your hubby just hears the pricetag and the hassle of getting the kids cared for in order for you to be gone. “No,” he says. “Nuh-uh. Not happ’nin’.”

Whether you’re letting a “no” cause you to stop in your relationship, in your pursuit of your dreams, or in your business deals, you are certainly missing out on some possibilities that exist for you if you’re willing to see no as a “detour” rather than the end.

Ten Ways a Life Coach Can Help Mompreneurs

On today’s Mom Biz Coach Audio Blog, I’m going to answer some questions that I’ve been asked several times by working moms or mothers who are thinking of starting a business. I know how overwhelming it can be to be a fulltime mom and a fulltime entrepreneur.

Most of the mom entrepreneurs I’ve coached spent a lot of time thinking about hiring me before actually doing so. They weren’t exactly sure what life coaching is all about, or what we actually do in a coaching relationship. Some of my clients admitted to feeling embarrassed about hiring a coach to support them, almost like it meant they were a failure at being able to do what they wanted to do in life.

On my radio show today I’m going to tell you exactly what hiring a life coach can do to support your business. If you want to be successful on your own terms, create a business that works even when you don’t, get the buy-in and support you need from your spouse and your family, figure out how to get more clients and make more money without working around the clock, and understand how to spend quality time with your kids (especially while they’re young!), tune in to today’s show. Growing is messy business

If the state of my office is any indication, I’m experiencing a major growth spurt. And my mind is just about as cluttered as my desk.

messy-business-mom-biz-coach-ezineNow, as a Coach, I generally believe that clutter, chaos and disorganization are signs of something going wrong in a person’s life. These external signs often reflect some internal processes that aren’t being handled. But today I’m going to give you three reasons why I believe messiness can be a sign of good things.

 Three Reasons Messiness is Good
 
1.  Messiness = Growth
 
If you’re doing things right, you’re growing your business. I know, I know, call me crazy for talking about growth during a Recession (note the capital R), but it is possible. Growth can be a lot of different things, like building your client list, increasing your visibility to your market, expanding or adding to your revenue streams, and deepening your relationships with your networks.
 
When you grow your business, you wind up outgrowing the plans, systems and structures that used to support you. You drop a ball or two. You forget, resist or avoid important action items. You get overwhelmed and stick your head in the sand. In short, you make messes. Of course, when you realize this it’s time to enlist some help, delegate, perhaps hire a Coach to get you focused and back on track. But don’t forget to acknowledge that this is what happens when you grow your business!
 
2.   Messiness = Trying Something New
 
If your business is humming along perfectly, and you have the time to cross all your Ts and dot your Is, and you never drop the ball, or make a mistake, or lose a client, etc. you probably feel pretty great and quite comfortable. As well you should. You have a system in place that is working for you.
 
But no matter what your business is, chances are you can only keep doing the same thing (perfectly) for so long. Pressure from the market, your customers, the economy, and competition will eventually demand you to make changes in your offerings. When it’s time to do something new, you’ll probably make a mess or two. I’m always challenging my clients to be willing to make a mess, try something new, to get outside their comfort zone to explore some new possibilities. And hey–as Moms, we’re really good at cleaning up messes, so why not make a few?
 
3. Messiness = Possibilities
 
What we resist, persists. Are you spending a lot of time and energy trying to avoid messes? Are you putting off some new approach to your business or some new marketing strategy because it might get messy?
 
Several of my clients have been resisting getting into Social Networking for fear of it taking too much of their time, or because they don’t already know how to use it effectively. And others are still avoiding asking people they really want to work with to hire them. Why? If you fear not knowing how to do something, or looking stupid, or being rejected, you’re avoiding a potential mess that could result in some amazing possibilities.
 
Lots of possibilities are hiding in those messes.
What messes have you been making lately?

I’m not a quiet person

I’m not a quiet person. So when I get quiet, it usually means there’s something going on. Well, I’m excited to say that there is a lot going on right now, and I’ve been quiet (or out of communication) lately because of it. It’s good to finally share some of what I’ve been up to with you again.
 
The start of every new year brings me renewed energy and a strong focus. Last month I created my Business Plan for 2009, and almost as soon as I wrote down my goals, I took off and got into action to start making them happen. Seeing my goals on paper just sets me on fire and off I go! That’s not to say that I do all this planning and accountability on my own–I can’t say enough about how important my Coach has been for keeping me focused and on track.
 
I am creating a lot of new offerings for mom entrepreneurs that I can’t wait to share with you. One of the biggies is a new teleseminar series that will give mom entrepreneurs all the advice, tools, resources, mentoring and coaching they need to love their life and business! The other is the formation of Biz/Life Coaching Groups that allow working moms the chance to learn from and share with a community of their peers. It’s a great way to take the edge off the loneliness of being an entrepreneur and to get the support and accountability of other women who really get you and may have already “been there, done that.”

What to do with your business during the economic meltdown?

Make good use of your down time by:

1) Create or update your business plan.

2) Take a look at your marketing strategy. Do you have one? When was the last time you updated it? Are you making the best use of free/nearly free social networking venues like LinkedIn, facebook and the various discussion boards of online communities? Everytime someone views your profile, your website or your blog, you have marketed yourself.

3) Now create a marketing plan. This is an actual agenda of events you’ll take part in, periodicals you’ll advertise in, press releases you’ll send out, workshops/conferences/etc. that you will use as a vehicle to get your name and your business out there.

4) Customer service. Have you followed up with your best clients lately? Who can you send a card to say thank you, happy birthday or I miss you to? Your past clients would love to hear from you and know that you’re thinking of them. While it’s quiet, take the time to thank them for their business and welcome them back. Follow up with your newest customers, too. How is the product or service they purchased from you working out? Also, consider going the extra mile and providing some advice, tips, encouragement for these new customers to make them glad they purchased from you rather than your competition.

5) Something new: Consider brushing up on some new area of your business. What can you learn? Can you find out more about a new product line, or learn some tricks with new technology that can support your clients? Is there a new product/service/strategy that would help free up your time for you to spend doing the thing that makes you successful?

6) Become an expert on what your competitors are doing. Don’t reinvent the wheel; research your competition and look for some new ideas that you could bring to your customers. If it worked for them, it will likely work for you.

No doubt the crazy economy has many entrepreneurs, business owners, well heck–nearly everybody–a bit nervous about what’s coming next and worried about how to survive while the pool of money to spend on our goods and services is shrinking. It is critical for businesses to focus on their top priorities and spend some of their down time doing actions that serve those priorities.

When business is booming, we seldom have time to create or update the foundational systems of our business that keep us growing and running smoothly. There’s no better time than the down time to check in on these systems and fill in any gaps. The suggestions above are a good place to start looking for what needs to be updated.

One note of caution: Before you start filling your down time with classes, research, writing thank you notes, networking, catching up on the latest technology, etc., remember to consider your top priority. If your #1 goal for the next month is to get new clients to generate income, do the actions that will lead to this result first. These are called “high pay-off actions” (HPAs). Do these actions first everyday or every week. Perhaps you spend two hours each morning attending a networking meeting or calling on some old clients. Once you’ve done your HPAs, then you can allow yourself to take on some of the other actions. Always do your HPAs first.
